The Vineyard Housing CRUNCH!

by Gwyn McAllister

Teaser

Vineyard Haven's historic Daggett House got stuck between neighbors temporarily while en route to its new waterfront home.

The little house on Beach Street across from the Vineyard Haven Post Office had been scheduled to make a move for four years.

Finally, on April 24, the 200 year-old Daggett House began its journey, only to get wedged between two buildings just yards from its foundation, jamming with a crunch against the AAA Island Auto Rentals building and the home of Gladys Small.

Some adjustments were made and eventually it squeaked through, trailing a few shingles and leaving Ms. Small with a damaged shed roof.

The house then made it across the street and down to its temporary home by the end of the Black Dog wharf without another hitch. There It awaits a trip by barge to a lot at the Tisbury Wharf Company, where it will be used as an office. The 19th century house has certainly earned its new seaside retirement home.
