This past Monday at the high school the Island Grown Initiative, the MVRHS Culinary Arts Department, and Dan Sauer of the Outermost Inn joined forces to create a meal with locally grown produce, seafood and beef that had a room of 67 people impressed with the agricultural bounty of Martha’s Vineyard – even in the middle of winter.
Island Grown Initiative is a grassroots non-profit that supports local food and farming on the Vineyard, and Vocational Education Director Jeff Rothwell and Culinary Arts Program Director Jack O’Malley have had a strong interest in getting locally-grown foods into the high school’s kitchen for some time. Bringing the two together was an exciting representation of the strength the local foods movement is gaining on island.
The evening sold out, but with a very Vineyard “there’s always room for more” attitude, extra tickets were sold for folks who showed up interested in the dinner.
The four-course meal used 85% local ingredients, and raised $1,500 for the high school’s Culinary Arts Program. Check out the evening’s menu and who provided the evening's local ingredients.
The Island Grown Initiative’s next event is an day long series of lectures this Saturday on all things poultry. For more information visit islandgrown.org.
