Cooper Gilkes at Coop's Bait and Tackle reports that although fishing has slowed some there are still fish to be had. Anglers are catching some bass at East Beach and Lobsterville. There are also bass at Devil’s Bridge. Bluefish have been biting at Wasque in the morning on falling tides. Fluking is getting better and the sea bass and scup are still around in good numbers.
Janet Messineo of Martha's Vineyard Fishing Charters and Taxidermy says Lobsterville continues to be hot and cold but when it is hot, it is fly fishing heaven. Keeper size bass galore. The north shore of the vineyard, from West Chop to Aquinnah is still alive with beautiful, healthy stripers. She was fishing the East side of the island last night and started to sing "These ARE the good old days" as she landed more than a dozen fish. These stripers averaged 15 to 20lbs. She has noticed that the fish have 19 to 20" girths. These are healthy fish! The beaches on Chappy are still unpredictable as to the opening or closing to protect the piping plover chicks. The Martha's Vineyard Surfcasters will hold their 19th annual picnic on July 12th. They meet at the bend in the road beach in Edgartown and welcome any fishermen or women that are interested in joining the club. Phil Horton's ribs and a casting contest run by Paul Schultz are the highlights. Bring the family and share in the camaraderie and good food.
