Cooper Gilkes at Coop's Bait and Tackle reports that bass and bluefish are biting at Wasque. Bass Fishing from boats is good at Tom Shoals, and the squid are still coming through the rips at West Chop. Fluking has slowed on the north side of the island while picking up on the south. Fishing for scup and sea bass remains good. The night bite at Lobsterville is still strong even with a visit from a great white the other night sending fisherman to shallow water.
Janet Messineo of Martha's Vineyard Fishing Charters and Taxidermy says the striper fishing has been spectacular. She is reminded of how the fishing used to be in the late 70's before the decline in the mid 80's. She spent the night on Chappaquidick in pursuit of a 50 lber. No 50 but plenty of fish in the 20 lb. range.
The boats are doing quite well off of West Chop for nice stripers and 8 to 10lb bluefish.
Just a couple more weeks before commercial fishing for stripers opens up and the dream of a really big fish gets put back on the shelf until Sept. When the commercial guys get into those schools of bass it becomes really hard to get them from the shore. The fluke have arrived and doormats have been reported from the boats off the Middle Ground. Seals and more seals are causing the day time bluefisherman some frustration.
Captain Jaime Boyle of Boylermaker Charters says fishing has remained excellent for flyrodders.
Check back every Thursday for a new report. –Tee Clarkson
