Cooper Gilkes at Coop's Bait and Tackle says fishing has been good all around. Chappaquiddick has opened back up to some traffic and anglers are catching a mixture of bass and bluefish in the surf. The Middle Ground remains excellent for stripers. Fluking is good also but anglers will have to work their way through an influx of dogfish. Devil’s bridge remains strong for stripers.
Captain Jaime Boyle of Boylermaker Charters reports that the bluefish have mixed in with the bass, making it hard to get to the stripers at times. Schools of large sand eels have been moving around the island, making them the bait of choice.
Janet Messineo of Martha's Vineyard Fishing Charters and Taxidermy has switched over to the south shore this week and is getting bass up to 33". She is watching 5 or 6 commercial boats each night working the waters between the Vineyard and Nantucket. They are most likely squid boats since they have their lights on and do very little moving from night to night. She had a call from one of the Trustees of Reservation who said you can now drive to Wasque Point after accessing the Dyke Bridge on Chappy. If you visit the Vineyard you might want to call the Trustees first as this can change from day to day because of the piping plovers.
Lobsterville is still loaded with small baits and driving the flyrodders crazy trying to compete with this bait to hook a striper. The bluefishing from the shore is scary slow for this time of year. The boats are doing really well off the North shore and up in Aquinnah and Squibbnocket.
The Martha's Vineyard Surfcasters are hosting the Nantucket Anglers Club for the first ever "MV/Nantucket Cup". Janet is fishing for 3 days with Diana Scott. Next year MV goes to Nantucket for a couple of days of fishing Big Bluefish.
Check back next Thursday for a new report.-Tee Clarkson
