"Not in our neighborhood" seemed to be the general outcry when recent college grad Jamie Rogers applied for a license to run a blacksmith shop from her Oak Bluffs' home on Pondview Drive.
Although she doesn't intend to sell from her studio, and assured her neighbors that it would not be disruptive, many of the residents of the Vineyard Hills subdivision reacted as if she had proposed establishing a crystal meth lab in her home.
Supporters of Ms Rogers noted that it was refreshing to hear of a young person wanting to put down roots and establish a business on island, unlike many college grads who can't wait to move off-island.
Ms. Rogers studied metalworking in college and is interested in using her skill to produce items such as jewelry, fireplace tools and towel racks. Seems her modest ambition will become reality as the selectman have granted her license. However, she will be permitted to operate her forge only from September to May during normal business hours.
Traditional crafts apparently are only granted limited recognition on Martha's Vineyard.
