Boat designer/builder has a passion for sailing that he loves to share with other enthusiasts.
Nat Benjamin began profiting from his passion back in 1980, when he founded Gannon and Benjamin Marine Railway together with Ross Gannon. At their “funky, friendly boatyard” on the beach at Martha’s Vineyard, Benjamin and Gannon build and repair wooden sailing boats.
Together they have built over 40 substantial vessels. The boats are mostly designed by Benjamin, who takes pride in building boats that are known for their speed, seaworthiness, practicality and simplicity. He finds inspiration in classic yachts and traditional boats, and builds them with the highest quality materials and meticulous craftsmanship.
But that doesn’t mean Gannon and Benjamin’s boats are intended for the “happy few.” They prefer to work for people who share their passion for sailing.
“I try to combine the basic ingredients for safety, speed, and comfort with a strong emphasis on good looks,” says Benjamin. “I’m not concerned with any rating system. I prefer to see men, women and children sailing with a smile. I feel it’s very important to keep an eye on current trends, but not to be influenced by the glitter, only the grace.”
