Martha's Vineyard

Matthew Stackpole

Matthew Stackpole has been immersed in history for most of his life. Matthew's father was a maritime historian and curator for Mystic Seaport.

Although he was born in Nantucket, Matthew's ancestors are from both islands - he is related to many of the longstanding families here.

Matthew first came to the Vineyard, after working for a while at Mystic Seaport, to serve as a deck hand and, later a mate on the Shenandoah. He describes this time in his life as "great introduction to this place."

Not surprisingly, Matthew became a history teacher and he and his wife, who also taught school, started spending summers here. They eventually bought a boat to live on and supplemented their income by offering charters.

Matthew served as the Director of Development for the MV Hospital for 11 years and then worked on a couple of development projects for Vineyard landmarks.

He was destined, however to continue a career involving him in history. He was the perfect candidate when the museum was seeking a director in 2000. since filling this post, the museum has seen a number of changes.

They have brought in a number of professional people; there are plans to build a new facility on 10 acres in West Tisbury; and the museum has recently acquired the entire seaman's bethel collection.

Matthew's enthusiam for the amazingly diverse collection is infectious. His goal is to make more people aware of this incredible resource. They have donated six panels representing Vineyard history to the MV Island Home. Matthew is further spreading the word through his regular feature on Plum's the MorningNoonandNight show.
