Martha's Vineyard: What's Going On

OB Welcomes Summer with a BANG!

Oak Bluffs went all out this year with a combination Harbor/Fest/ Summer Solstice/Fireworks display - smooshing it all together into one big sunrise-to-sunset party in the Vineyard's party town. The longstanding Harborfest rolled right over into the third annual OB Summer Solstice festival, giving folks the opportunity to take advantage the longest day of the year - dining at outdoor tables on Circuit Ave while enjoying three different bands located up and down the street. Many folks wondered why OB can't close the streets off to traffic every Saturday. If you have an opinion, write a comment. See pics from the Harbor Festival.

Town Administrator Michael Dutton was on Plum's Today on the Vineyard this morning, talking about the recent renaissance of Oak Bluffs and we discussed the possibility of continuing the street party during other events throughtout the summer.

The fireworks display was a huge crowd pleaser. Although, unlike the popular August fireworks, the pyrotechnics display didn't focus as much on bigger, louder and higher, the show was more artistically balanced, with many intricate, flowerlike blasts. The Oak Bluffs Association was only able to raise the money one week before the event, so didn't have that much time to publicize the fireworks, keeping the crowd in Ocean Park, a manageable size. Judging by the post-Solstice buzz on the street, the town will hopefully make the Street Fair/Fireworks an annual event.
