Martha's Vineyard: What's Going On

Oak Bluffs Bites Back

Although town voters squelched a proposal to ban the annual Monster Shark Tournament last fall, OB selectman have now voted to deny the organizers' request for a liquor license. Wendy Benchley, the widow of Jaws author Peter Benchley recently spoke out against the annual shark hunt at a selectmen's meeting, and there has been vocal opposition among the board recently. What will upwards of 250 boats full of sportfisherman thirsty for more than just shark blood do if denied the ability to imbibe at their awards ceremony? Well, possibly the Boston Big Game Fishing Club will take their tourney elsewhere. And there's talk that the club's president Steven James will file a discrimination law suit. Maybe next year they'll sponsor an OB Selectmen hunt. See a video from last year's Monster Shark Tournament.
