Martha's Vineyard: What's Going On

Edible Island Premieres on Plum

It seems like everyone - from high-end designers to fast food chains - have jumped on the "sustainable bandwagon" these days. But here on the Vineyard, we've stayed closely connected to the land for generations. The spirit of local living is perfectly personified in the "local guy makes good" story of Chris Fischer, whose travels have brought him to the kitchens of some of NYs most prestigious restaurants, and back again to his roots on MV farms.

Chris comes from a long line of Vineyard farmers and was raised on growing, harvesting, foraging and fishing. Plum is fortunate to have partnered with Chris for a new show Edible Island which will focus on the bounty of the Vineyard, the people who make a living growing and gathering, and unique recipes incorporating the best the island has to offer.

Edible Island - Local Lamb

In the first episode Chris harvests asparagus with his grandfather, talks lambs and goats with his cousin, and shellfishes with buddy Karston Larsen of the fishing Larsen family. Then he whips up the freshest-of-fresh dishes with the ingredients he gathers around island. Check out a clip and read a story about Chris and Edible Island from Fine Cooking called A Young Chef Comes Home to Grow.

You can also find Chris at the West Tisbury Farmer's Market every Saturday (Wed & Sat as of July) selling vegetables from his family farm (be sure to sample his baby potatoes, they're everything you never thought a potato could be) and doing what he does best - encouraging people to buy local, for the sake of their health - and the health of our precious island.
