A confirmed great white shark sighting has forced the closing of South Beach - a scene (with a precautionary twist) straight out of the 1975 classic Jaws. Thursday's South Beach sighting by a lifeguard of an estimated 20 foot shark was confirmed yesterday, prompting a ban on swimming on South and State Beaches. Today the beaches are closed, while helicopters fly over the areas where the confirmed (and unconfirmed State Beach) sightings indicate that the shark or sharks in cruising. One theory for the rare appearance of a great white in our waters is that the abundance of seals is bringing more sharks close to shore. The Monster Shark Tournament is set for next week.
