Vineyard Resident Carly Simon to Release New Album

Longtime Island resident Carly Simon will be releasing her first album with original material in eight years this Tuesday. When the Washington Post gave her a call to talk about the album and what's new in general, she cited laying down new gravel and deciding whether or not to put down an ailing sheep as top concerns. House maintenance and farm animals over glitz and glamour? Very Vineyard of you, Carly. More from the Washington Post.

Johnny Hoy Plays Benefit for W. Tisbury School

The Ag Hall was jumping last weekend as the island's favorite blues band performed a benefit concert. Folks enjoyed the show and a dessert buffet and helped raise money to build a kitchen and start a vegetable garden in the unused West Tisbury School courtyard.

Vampire Weekend on Plum

Vampire Weekend has blossomed. They've now played on SNL, graced the cover of Spin and might just have been this year's "it" band at SXSW. Lucky TV network that we are, Plum packed them in for their first ever TV appearance in a segment of Juan's Basement. Get the kefir off your keffiyeh, and check them out.

MVFF Screens Seeger Film

MVFF at the Capawock

Winter on the Vineyard is a great time to meet up with friends you don't get to see during the summer months and catch up on your movie viewing. Recently Thomas Bena combined these beloved off-season activities as the Martha's Vineyard Film Festival filled the Capawock Theater for a screening of Pete Seeger: The Power of Song - and then added live music for good measure.

The Sauce Boss Returns to Offshore Ale

Sauce Boss on Guitar

Bill Wharton aka The Sauce Boss brings dinner theater to a whole new level. His live performances offer a multi-sensory experience that transports audiences to the swamps of Wharton's native Florida. This past Tuesday a hungry crowd at the Offshore Ale feasted on some tasty original rock and blues AND a bowl of Wharton's down-home gumbo, concocted onstage during his performance.

Wharton's novelty act was a hit last winter at the Offshore, a venue known for bringing out-of-town acts to the Vineyard year-round, and offering something for every musical taste. His return this year was much anticipated by converts to this unique performance, featuring Wharton as vocalist, slide guitar master, storyteller and chef.

Wharton opened up his set with Let the Big Dog Eat, an original tune that was featured in the Jonathan Demme film Something Wild. An appreciative audience, who braved a bayou-like deluge to attend, were delighted with the cooking/rocking act. The crowd was transfixed by Wharton's slide-guitar playing and humorous stories, as well as the southern specialty being prepared in a huge pot on stage. At the conclusion of the show, the Sauce Boss handed around cups of his spicy gumbo.

The Sauce Boss first took his act on the road in 1990 and, according to his website he has fed over 148,000 people. He also sells his own blends of hot sauce and barbecue sauce.

The Sauce Boss will return in the fall. In the meantime, you can order Wharton's sauces or original CDs at sauceboss.com.
